Two years after his shocking confession to a fatal hit and run accident, charges have been dropped and a man is now free.

David McCarthy was released from the Will County jail after prosecutors decided his confession was false.

Two years ago McCarthy showed up at the Plainfield home of Michelle Lech and told her he’d hit her 20 year old sister,  Melissa, in 2008 and left her to die on the shoulder of the road.

A mental evaluation found McCarthy suffers from disorders that caused him to make false statements about the accident.

The Lech family is not convinced McCarthy is innocent and is upset that the charges were dropped.
