Major Kennedy construction closures begin tonight

A major disruption is coming to the Kennedy Expressway.

Starting at 10 p.m. Friday, and running through early Monday morning, the inbound lanes will be partially shut-down between Chicago and Grand Avenues.

It will be part of the first of three phases to remove the 55 year-old Ontario Street Bridge.

Project engineers are urging drivers to avoid the Kennedy and take public transportation in-and-out of the city. Metra and the CTA are running longer trains as a result of the construction project.

“We hope that people will listen and take our advice. But, it’s hard for us to really predict how many folks will be on the roadways,” said Jae Miller of IDOT.

Next weekend, the same stretch of the outbound Kennedy will be closed for the same reason.

IDOT is doing the work on the weekends to avoid even greater problems for weekday commuters. A quarter million travelers use the Kennedy on a typical weekday.
