A man was shot while cleaning gutters this afternoon on the city’s South Side.
60-year-old Ed Walker was caught in a shootout between two gang members just before 2 p.m. in the 2300 block of West 72nd St.
Family members say Walker keeps pretty much to himself on a normally quiet street in Chicago Lawn. He would do pretty much anything for anybody, they say, in a neighborhood ravaged by gangs and gun violence. Today, he was helping a female neighbor across the street clean-up around her house. When he finished-up and stepped out of her yard, he was hit by two of about half-a-dozen rounds fired between two gang members.
Walker was rushed to Advocate Christ Hospital in where he remains in serious condition. He was bleeding internally with blood pooling in his lungs.
Sources say a suspect in this may have been identified but all Chicago police are able to confirm now is that the shots were fired from a vehicle which fled the scene and was found abandoned a few blocks away.
The investigations continues.
