A young black bear is making the rounds in Illinois and he’s been covering a lot of ground. There have been many sightings, the most recent of which was near Genoa, in DeKalb County.
The sightings began in Stockton Memorial Day weekend.
The DNR has mapped sightings around Rockford in Boone County and near Belvidere.
Wildlife experts say it’s a male bear, most likely from Wisconsin and probably looking for a mate. They say the bear needs to be respected from a distance.
The American black bear was almost eliminated from Illinois by the late 1800s but they’re making a comeback. A new law will soon make them a protected species.
