An elderly couple was killed, and a police officer was injured, in a house fire in Mokena.

The blaze broke-out at the home at Magnolia and Catalpa around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The couple was in their 80s, but their identities haven’t been released. The man had health problems, and relied on oxygen tanks.

One of the victims was found in a hallway, and the other in a bedroom.

Frankfort Township Fire Protection firefighters and Mokena police officers tried to rescue the couple, but couldn’t get to them in time.

“It’s a shame to hear,” said neighbor Kristin Bajarunas.

A policeman suffered smoke inhalation, and was treated and released from a hospital.

An investigation is underway into what sparked the fire.
