Two people died and three others were hospitalized after a woman dropped her cell phone into a cesspool in China.
According to the South China Morning Post, the woman dropped her phone when she went to the “open pit toilet” Wednesday. Her husband jumped in to the pit, which had “knee deep” sewage in it, to retrieve the phone but passed out overcome by the smell.
The South China Morning Post reports the husband’s mother jumped in the cesspit to save the man but she also lost consciousness. The woman then followed and passed out as well.
The paper reports the father-in-law called for help and then jumped in the cesspit but could not get out. Two people who came to help and entered the pit also fainted.
Other bystander located a rope and pulled the six people from the pit.
The husband and mother-in-law died in hospital while the woman and another person remain in the intensive care unit, the paper reports. A hospital doctor said the victims suffocated.
