The boy, 14, took the car from his grandfather, who then reported it as stolen, according to the Syracuse Police Department. A tipster noticed the car in the city and alerted police, which tried to chase down the car.

The Founders Park chase ended after another driver, Bryson Rowley, used his truck to stop the fleeing car by crashing into it. He said he was afraid for everyone’s safety.

“The person driving the truck could see it was turning back into the park, and he did not want the car to hit all of the children, or any of the children,” Officer Erin Behm said.

“My heart dropped,” Bryson’s wife, Brandy Rowley, said. “I honestly thought, one of those kids is going to die.”

Police took the teen to a nearby juvenile detention center.
