Home Ice: Project manager transforms model home into mini hockey rink

HOME ICE HAWKS RINK

It takes the term ‘home ice’ to a whole new meaning; pucks, sticks, jersey– it’s not the locker room at the U.C., It’s a Blackhawks basement in northwest suburban Elgin.

Justin Benzel is the senior project manager for the Bowes Creek Country Club where this model home now sits.

Just last week opening its doors hoping to attract a little business– and got more than planned..

“It was intended to set ourselves apart from our competitors the unintended thing is it’s become a hub for the neighborhood kids everybody wants to be down here and it’s become more than the house itself.

This mini United Center boasts faux ice, Hawks logo, home and away penalty boxes, TVs with highlights on loop and the best part… the chance to feel like real player.

A little more love for the team south of the city atop the Paul Bunion statue in Evergreen Park, now toting a giant hockey stick– put there by a local comedy group to rally on the fans and promote a locally written movie.

Head down Kedzie in the next few days and hopefully you’ll see the coveted “W” banner flying with it
