School put on lockdown after man shot on West Side
A Chicago elementary school was put on lockdown this afternoon after a man was shot nearby.
According to police an 18-year-old male was shot in the 1600 block of South Avers Ave around 3 p.m. The Tribune reports the man was wounded in the chest and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious-to-critical condition.
Police issued a lockdown at William Penn Elementary School nearby at 16th And Avers Ave.
Police say the shooting happened across the street from the school, not on school property. Police say the man had no relation to the school.
Chicago police and CPS worked together and CPS implemented an “alternate dismissal route.”
The investigation continues.
