An Illinois lawmaker isn’t attending the final days of the spring session, because he’s on trial for bribery.
Democratic State Rep. Derrick Smith of Chicago is accused of pocketing a $7,000 bribe for supporting a state grant application set up by the FBI.
Smith tried to get the trial delayed so he could attend the session, but the judge in the case denied the motion.
Jury selection is now under way.
Smith is finishing out his term after losing a re-election bid in the March primary.
