Hail producing thunderstorms closing in on the western suburbs

Severe Thunderstorm Warning until 7:15PM for most of De Kalb County and western Kane County.

Widely scattered thunderstorms have developed over some of Chicago’s
north and northwest suburbs. At 6:15PM, these storms are below severe
limits, and no warnings are in effect.

Further west, thunderstorms are intensifying west if Interstate 35.
These are expected to move into DeKalb County between 6:30PM and 7:00PM.

A massive thunderstorm is hugging the I-88 corridor moving into
southern Kane County. Radar indicates golf ball (1.75″) to baseball
(2.75″) sized hail is likely with this storm.

Intense thunderstorms continue to track across portions of the Chicago
area. In the short term, the strongest storms will impact the west and
southwest suburbs. Large hail remains the primary severe weather threat.

More than 115 flights cancelled at O’Hare Airport.

Midway Airport issued a ground stoppage for all in and outbound flights.

The hail
threat continues with this storm, and in the past 10 minutes concern is
growing for damaging winds of 65mph of greater.
The most intense winds
are headed south toward I-80, Tinley Park and Hazel Crest.

The Severe Thunderstorm Watch for the Chicago area was allowed to expire
at 11PM.
 A low severe storm threat still exists across NE Illinois
& NW Indiana for a  couple more hours, but the threat is not
widespread enough to warrant a new watch box.
