CHICAGO – May 19, 2014 – This severe weather season, WGN-TV wants viewers to be prepared in the event of a weather emergency. WGN-TV is teaming up with Midland Radio Corporation in holding a weather event, “Tom’s Weather Day,” on Saturday May 31, 2014 from 11am – 2pm at the Walgreens at 612 Raymond Dr., the corner of Raymond Dr and Ogden Ave. (Route 34) in Naperville IL. WGN’s Chief Meteorologist Tom Skilling will be meeting and greeting guests in an effort to talk about the importance of advance warning to save lives during severe weather events. For more information, go to wgntv.com/weatherday.
Midland NOAA Weather Alert Radios will be available for purchase at Walgreens. The NOAA radios transmit immediate notification of severe weather or emergency alert signals broadcasted by the National Weather Service to users, which is helpful when severe weather strikes quickly. On hand to help NOAA radio purchasers program their radios to receive warnings for the counties in which they live will be Kevin Birk and Amy Seeley, National Weather Service meteorologists. A portion of the proceeds from the radios will be donated to the American Red Cross.
A WeatherBug Weather Station will be onsite at the event, where a representative will be available to interact with guests and explain how the WeatherBug station works. These stations are transmitting weather data all across the Chicagoland area from local schools as well as other locations. Students from WeatherBug schools have been participating in “Friday Forecaster” and a sampling of those video forecasts will be displayed at the event.
The DuPage County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management will have an interactive public education vehicle at the event. The 1966 International Harvester was originally a Civil Defense Heavy Rescue Unit, and has been completely restored and updated. While the outside of the vehicle is restored to its original condition, the interior compartments now contain flat-screen monitors and displays that show the public how to prepare for disasters.
Naperville Community Emergency Response Team (NCERT) volunteers will be providing Emergency Preparedness information to the event attendees, explaining steps that individuals can take before, during and after a disaster to prepare and minimize the impact of dangerous events. They will also provide information on locally offered classes specifically directed toward Emergency Preparedness and CERT Basic Training.
In addition, don’t forget to play the “Grand…Prize…Game” for your chance at some Tom Skilling artwork used on the Chicago Tribune weather page!
