Three roommates in New Paltz, N.Y., made a shocking find in a beat-up old couch they bought at a thrift store.
As told to The Little Rebellion, Reese Werkhoven, Cally Guasti and Lara Russo bought the couch for $20 in March, and when they returned home with it, one of them found an envelope in the cushions that had $7,000 in it.
They dug around in the couch a little more and found two more envelopes. There was $40,000 in all.
One of the envelopes had a woman’s name on it. Instead of going on a spending spree, they tracked down the woman and drove to her house.
She explained that, before her husband died, he had stashed money away for her each week. But she was hospitalized recently, and while she was at rehab, her daughter gave the ratty couch away to Goodwill.
The young adults said they could tell right away that she was a really nice woman. She gave them $1,000 as a thank you.
