The Cure, Jane’s Addiction, The National, Rise Against and the Wu-Tang Clan were among 100 bands announced Tuesday for the 10th anniversary Riot Fest in Humboldt Park on Sept. 12-14.
Also scheduled to appear are former Pussy Riot members/activists Nadya Tolokonnikova and Masha Alekhina. They are expected to participate in an “interactive panel discussion.” The Pussy Riot punk collective drew the ire of Russian authorities – including President Vladimir Putin — in recent years with its provocative public protests and performances. Tolokonnikova and Alekhina, who became the face of the band, were imprisoned for 13 months in 2012-13 for “hooliganism,” sparking an international outcry from human rights groups.
Also notable is that headliner Jane’s Addiction is led by Perry Farrell, a founding member of a competing festival, Lollapalooza, which plays Aug. 1-3 in Grant Park.
The Chicago festival is sandwiched between two other Riot Fests, in Toronto on Sept. 6-7 and Denver on Sept. 19-21, with the Cure headlining all three. Tickets ($99.98 for three-day pass) are on sale at ticketfly.com.
