Mother’s Day started out pleasant in the Chicago area Sunday until Mother Nature herself stepped up late Sunday afternoon.
A severe thunderstorm watch was issued just after 3 p.m. for 27 counties in northern Illinois, including the entire Chicago area, until 10 p.m.
The storms that moved through northern Illinois and into northwest Indiana produced wind gusts of 78 mph at Gary International Airport and gusts of 68 mph near Grayslake, as weel as quarter-size hail, according to the weather service. In southern Cook County, 1.25 inches of rain fell in 20 minutes.
