Raging flood waters from Sunday’s storms may have caused an explosion in a Deep Tunnel pipeline.
Residents in Calumet City say they heard a loud noise, like an airplane, and when they looked out their apartment window, they saw an explosion last night that sent water, sand and rocks shooting at least fifteen feet into the air.
Sharon Krueger and Debbie Pawlak live in the building at 1560 Burnham. They say a manhole cover behind their apartment building is connected to the Deep Tunnel drainage system.
They claim a similar blast happened two years but it was not nearly as severe as the explosion last night.
Pictures from Skycam 9 show a large crater, at least ten feet deep in the space.
A cement drain access can been seen but the manhole cover was blown off.
Krueger says she saw a wave of water rush toward her building and she alerted other residents to the flooding.
The basement apartment did suffer some flooding damage.
No one was injured.
Calumet City crews were on the scene Sunday night and remained there Monday morning.
