Winner’s Curse

Unknown-1
We have games 2 and 3 of the Atlanta series tonight and tomorrow on WGN. Jeff Samardzija is STILL looking for his first win despite a ridiculous 1.62 ERA through 7 starts. Samardzija has gone less than 7 innings once (5.2 innings at Cincinnati) and has allowed more than 2 runs just twice (3 twice against the Reds). Yes, it’s a shame he doesn’t have a win, although we have pretty much debunked the idea that pitcher wins mean much anymore. If you know baseball, you know he’s been brilliant, elite, outstanding–whatever adjective you want to use. The fact he’s 0-3 is pretty much irrelevant.
The Cubs’ starting pitching has kept them in most games. Jason Hammel was very good once again last night in a no-decision. Edwin Jackson is coming off probably his best start as a Cub and Travis Wood, by and large, has been solid, although his last start killed his ERA. Not sure yet about Jake Arrieta, who has only made a couple starts off the DL, but if he can get it going, this is a pretty impressive group.
Now, if they can just get some run support…

Samardzija can only do the best he can do on the mound; he cannot allow the pathetic offensive support to derail his mastery on the mound.
