Woman in shaken baby case gets another legal victory

The woman at the center of a high-profile, “shaken baby” death case gets a legal victory on Wednesday.

A judge granted a request from Jennifer Del Prete’s lawyers to not make her register as a sex offender.

An old law stated anyone who’s convicted of murdering a child must register as a sex offender.

The 43 year-old, mother of two, was found guilty of killing a 14-month old baby at a daycare center in Romeoville in 2003.

But last week, a judge found new evidence points to her innocence, and criticized the science behind the “shaken baby syndrome” used to convict her.

She was released from Logan Correctional Center, and is free on bond pending her appeal.

She has always maintained her innocence.

“It’s been very difficult, not just for me but for everybody involved, family, friends, the other family, just everybody. We’ve had a tough struggle. A long waiting for this,” said Del Prete.

The next step for her: fighting an appeal in state court.
