Woman delivers baby along side busy Chicago expressway

Charlotte River Shishkoff was ready to meet the world early this morning, “almost” on time. Her first time parents, however, were not quite as ready.

Around 10 p.m. Monday, Charlotte River Shishkoff, now in the arms of her mother at Elmhurst hospital, was trying to tell her first time parents it was time. That’s when contractions started. Liz Shishkoff of Glen Ellyn wasn’t due until Wednesday. The 27-year-old mother-to-be had planned to deliver her baby quietly and naturally. She tried to work through the pain at home.

But Charlotte has other ideas.

“The baby was ready to come. So we tried to get to the hospital,” Liz said.

They quickly hopped into their Ford Focus and sped down I-88 for only about 10 minutes until Liz could take it no more.

“She says, ‘I think it’s going to happen soon! Pull over now!’” said Liz’s husband Ray.

So sitting in the front seat of their compact sized car, Liz placed her feet on the dashboard and began to push. In the eastbound lanes along the Reagan Memorial Highway near Midwest Road, Charlotte River greeted her parents: 7 lbs and 20 inches long.

Paramedics showed up after the delivery and promptly gave the new dad a handshake. Everyone is doing well.

A quiet natural birth, just as they had planned. Sort of.
