Suburban cop pleads ‘not guilty’ in death of 95-year-old man

Park Forest police officer Craig Taylor left the Markham court house Tuesday morning holding his wife’s hand and without talking to the media.

He pleaded not guilty to wreckless conduct charges in the death of 95-year-old John Wrana.

Wrana’s step-daughter, Sharon Mangerson, who was also in the courtroom was a little emotional after seeing officer Taylor for the first time, “I think it’s a terrible tragedy everywhere.”

It happened July 26th of last year at the Victory Center Retirement Home.

Wrana – a World War II veteran became belligerent after refusing medical treatment for a urinary tract infection and was reportedly threatening other residents and being combative with paramedics.

When Park Forest police arrived, Wrana was brandishing a knife and a 2-foot-long metal shoehorn that some officers thought was a machete.

The scene commander fired a taser but missed.

That’s when prosecutors says Officer Taylor fired five shotgun bean bag rounds. Four hit Wrana in the stomach and one in the head.

Wrana later died at the hospital of internal bleeding.

Taylor’s attorney describe his client as a good officer who’s not some cowboy, with an impecable record who has the support of his department.

But Mangerson and her attorney feel someone has to be held accountable for her step-father’s death.

What if the old man was black and the officer was white? Do you think the story would have gotten more press? I'm just kidding. If the old man was black and the officer was white there would have been a lot more media attention
