Divers pull woman out of Lake Michigan; search continues for man
A woman rescued from Lake Michigan near Montrose Harbor is in a hospital today and crews are searching for a man believed to have gone into the water after her.
Emergency teams rescued a woman in her 20′s from a nearly freezing Lake Michigan just after 2 a.m. She barely survived her overnight swim and is now listed in critical condition at Weiss Memorial Hospital.
Rescue teams thought they were done for the night after the woman was pulled from the water. But a witness told police a man she was with went into the lake to help her. Crews searched for the man, but even with a thermal imaging camera they could not find anyone.
A woman who says the missing man is her 20-year-old brother told WGN off camera that her brother, Victor Martinez, was at the harbor with three other people, hanging out — and he went into the lake after his girlfriend decided to go in.
As the sun came up this morning the Police Marine Unit was back in Montrose Harbor. The water and weather conditions kept them from diving, but police say they will be doing visual searches for the man every couple of hours.
