Dan Ryan lanes reopened after fatal early-morning crash
Authorities have reopened the outbound lanes of the Dan Ryan Expressway at 18th Street after a fatal traffic crash early his morning that left a man dead and three other people hospitalized.
A 32-year-old man was killed in the two-vehicle crash, which happened in the outbound lanes near 26th Street about 3:30 a.m., according to Illinois State Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
The man killed was a passenger inside a car that was stopped on the expressway, possibly stalled, when another car rear-ended it, said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.
Three other people were injured and taken to hospitals, said Langford. Two of those were in serious to critical condition and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and another was taken in fair to serious condition to Mercy Hospital and Medical Center, Langford said. There was a fourth patient who declined to be taken to a hospital.
There were multiple other injuries, according to Illinois State Police. The Chicago Fire Department responded with four ambulances, according to a post on the Twitter feed of the department’s media office.
Police diverted southbound traffic to Interstate-55 for hours, but the expressway has since reopened.
