Chicago pediatrician among 3 killed in Afghanistan hospital

A doctor from the Chicago area was among three killed in an attack at a hospital in Afghanistan.

Dr. Jerry Umanos was a pediatrician at Lawndale Christian Health Center for 16 years.

He and his wife moved to Afghanistan. where he worked at a hospital specializing in children’s and maternal health.

Umanos worked for the Christian charity CURE International for the last seven years, according to a source.

Four American workers, including Dr. Umanos, were shot by an officer guarding the CURE hospital in downtown Kabul. Three of them were killed, including a father and son visiting the hospital.

The officer guard shot himself but survived. The motive for the attack is unknown.

Patients and staff at the Chicago clinic say Umanos was a loving and caring doctor.
