A man was shot and killed by police this afternoon after threatening his family, police said.
Chicago Police were called at 5:45 p.m. to a home on the corner of 50th and Rockwell in the Gage Park neighborhood. There 21-year-old Hector Hernandez was holding his 2-year-old baby in one arm and holding a black bag with a gun inside of it in the other.
The Fraternal Order of Police claims he was arguing with the child’s mother. He eventually went inside, handed over the baby, dropped the bag and moved to the kitchen.
Police arrived and Hernandez, according to the FOP, took a knife and held it to his own neck. He dropped it and grabbed a bigger knife threatening to kill himself. Then he grabbed a butcher knife and told officers he was going after his family.
The FOP says officers tried to use a Taser gun to subdue him, but it didn’t take. That’s when they opened fire killing Hernandez.
The victim’s stepfather says police shot the man 8 times. He wants to know why it was necessary to kill his step son.
