Man shot and killed by police on South West side

A man was shot and killed by police this afternoon after threatening his family, police said.

Chicago Police were called at 5:45 p.m. to a home on the corner of 50th and Rockwell in the Gage Park neighborhood. There 21-year-old Hector Hernandez was holding his 2-year-old baby in one arm and holding a black bag with a gun inside of it in the other.

The Fraternal Order of Police claims he was arguing with the child’s mother. ┬áHe eventually went inside, handed over the baby, dropped the bag and moved to the kitchen.

Police arrived and Hernandez, according to the FOP, took a knife and held it to his own neck. He dropped it and grabbed a bigger knife threatening to kill himself. Then he grabbed a butcher knife and told officers he was going after his family.

The FOP says officers tried to use a Taser gun to subdue him, but it didn’t take. That’s when they opened fire killing Hernandez.

The victim’s stepfather says police shot the man 8 times. He wants to know why it was necessary to kill his step son.
