The state’s largest maximum-security prison remains on lockdown after corrections officers find more than a dozen crude weapons and gallons of homemade alcohol.

Guards discovered the items during a routine search at the Menard Correctional Center near Chester, just southeast of St. Louis.

Util further notice, inmates aren’t allowed to leave their cells unless they have health-care issues or need to shower.

Menard Corrections Sergeant and union representative Kevin Hirsch says the discovery illustrates the need for more staffing at the prison.
