Chicago police are investigating an armed robbery by a man wearing a safety utility vest similar to that of CPS Safe Passage workers.
The incident happened in the 5700 block of Midway Park on the city’s West Side around 6:45 a.m. Wednesday. Priscilla Hatch, wife of well-known Rev Marshall Hatch of Mt. Pilgrim Church, says she was walking out of her front door and to her car when she was robbed. Mrs Hatch says the man emerged from the side of her house wearing a neon vest like a CPS Safe Passage worker or a utility worker.
She did notice he had a bandana over his face, but Mrs Hatch says didn’t think twice because he was wearing that neon vest.
Her husband was in the house and then came outside to search for the robber. They say a neighbor and his dog managed to corner the man briefly before he eventually got away.
Pastor Hatch believes the robber was intentionally preying on the assumption that someone in a safety vest is doing something legitimate.
The pastor and his wife say neighbors have called a community meeting for Saturday afternoon to deal with safety concerns.
Chicago police say there have been a number of armed robberies in the area, but it’s not clear if they are connected.
