Cook County may follow Chicago’s lead and ban sales of pets from puppy mills.

A new law would effect at least 13 pet stores in the county.

The law would require those stores to sell dogs, cats and rabbits only from shelters and humane societies, rather than commercial breeders.

Animal activists claim puppy mills treat pets inhumanely, promoting chronic sickness and misbehavior.

A similar law was passed in Chicago last month.

The county measure will be up for a vote April 9.
