A man from Algonquin is in critical condition after driving his car into a retention pond.

It happened late Wednesday morning on Randall Rd.

A witness says 57-year-old Paul Mellor was in a parking lot when his car jumped a curb and went into the pond.

A police and fire rescue crew smashed his sunroof, cut off his seat belt, and pulled him out as the car sank.

Mellor had no pulse at the time, but now he is at Sherman Hospital in Elgin.
