The family of a car theft victim spotted the stolen vehicle in a far Southeast Side salvage yard, uncovering what police say may be an international car chopping operation.

Police raided Adelman’s Truck and Equipment in the 3000 block of East 106th Street.  They’ve confirmed  19 cars that were stolen, but said the number could rise.

It was previously reported that police found between 70 and 100 stolen cars.

Many of the vehicles were commercial, from businesses such as plumbing companies, and were stolen as far away as Highland Park and Valparaiso, Indiana.

Police believe a group of people affiliated with a towing company had been stealing vehicles for six months, scrapping some of the vehicles for parts and shipping others overseas.

A man connected with Adelman’s is in police custody and has admitted to knowing about an operation involving the stolen vehicles, according to an official.

Police were preparing a search warrant to more thoroughly search the property and connections to any possible illegal activity.
