8 Charged in theft ring that stole $2M in cargo, cars

Eight people from Indiana are charged with stealing more than $2 million worth of merchandise from freight trains in the Chicago area and Northwest Indiana.

The eight were arrested and accused of stealing everything from computer equipment to over-the-counter drugs; police also recovered stolen vehicles and motorcycles — in all, nearly $3 million worth of merchandise.

The thefts started eight months ago.

Police plan to arrest about a dozen more people in connection with the thefts.
