Funeral today for Officer David Harris

Described as a cop’s cop 42-year-old, David Harris died much too young at the hands of a woman who ironically prosecutors say was trying to escape south suburban police when she crashed into Harris as he was leaving work, on his way home.

At Blake Lamb Funeral home in Oak Lawn, visitation Sunday for a fallen Chicago police officer.  Throughout the day family friends and fellow officers came to pay their respects.

Forty two year old David Harris who has just gotten off work and on his way home last week when his Lexus was struck.  By a white van at 87th and Lafayette street near the Dan Ryan.

Authorities say a 31-year-old Calumet Park woman was behind the wheel and trying to escape Calumet Park police who had attempted to pull her over

Investigators say several pounds of marijuana were found inside Shannell Terrell’s van.

She is now charged with first degree murder, aggravated DUI, aggravated fleeing an accident causing bodily injury and possession of cannabis.  A passenger in the van has been charged with lesser offenses.

A long line of police vehicles with blue lights on escorted Harris’s body to the medical examiner’s office on the morning of the fatal crash.

Back at Blake Lamb this evening, mayor Emanuel was seen leaving the funeral home after paying his respects and visiting with Harris’s family.

Harris leaves behind a wife and two young sons.  He will be laid to rest Monday at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Hillside.
