Mom adds sandbox to son’s grave so older son can play with him
A photo of a mother’s touching tribute to her 5-day-old son who died has gone viral on Facebook.
When Ashlee Hammac’s son Ryan died, she knew her 3-year-old son Tucker needed his own way to mourn. So, she added a sandbox to little Ryan’s grave so Tucker could share his trucks with his little brother.
Hammac shared a photo of the gravesite on a Facebook page dedicated to bereaved parents who have experienced a pregnancy loss, stillbirth or the loss of an infant. After posting it, she told People magazine that received an enormous outpouring of support.
People reports that Ryan died do to Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephlopathy, or HIE, a brain dysfunction that occurs when there is a lack of blood flow to the brain.
Hammac and her family are raising awareness of HIE through their new nonprofit Pages to Memories, an organization that donates supplies to neonatal intensive care units and provides emotional support to struggling families.
WXIN reports that Ryan’s heart was donated to save the life of another baby.
