Investigators are looking for the cause of a 2-alarm fire on Chicago’s Northwest Side.
More than 100 firefighters were on the scene on Monday 2917 W. Irving Park Rd.
The fire started at about 3 a.m. at an auto financing company that moved into an old heating and cooling systems business, Air Control Inc. The fire spread quickly through the building.
Chemicals inside the building triggered several small explosions.
The Chicago Fire Department declared a Hazardous Materials situation to handle those explosions.
Several shops, including a Mexican Restaurant were affected by the smoke. So were residents in nearby apartments and homes, which were evacuated ,
]The fire was extinguished before 6 a.m. but firefighters remained on scene to deal with hot spots.
CTA buses and traffic in the area have been rerouted.
