Police in Indianapolis have arrested a suspect in a hit-and-run crash that killed a 6-month-old boy from Chicago earlier this week.
Gary Shinnamon II is charged with failure to stop at a fatal accident and driving with a suspended license.
Both are felonies.
The accident happened late Tuesday near an on-ramp to I-65.
6-month-old Yeshua Shafford was ejected from his family’s car.
Police reports show Shinnamon was arrested for DUI back in 2012.
Shafford’s father said he tried to confront Shinnamon after the accident but Shinnamon and a friend ran.
“The waited good enough for him to turn his attention to someone else and they ran,” said Shafford’s mother, Kashica Whitfield. “”Cowards. They took my baby and they ran.”
Shinnamon surrendered to police Thursday.
“He wants me to know that he’s sorry,” Whitfield said. “I want him to know that I will never be able to see my baby again, so sorry don’t cut it.”
