Harsh winter challenges spring athletes, threatens career boost

The long, harsh winter is taking its toll on more than just cars, streets and spirits.  Spring sports at schools around Chicagoland are facing serious weather-related challenges. Not only challenging now but for the future of the young players hoping for a shot at the big time.
In southwest suburban McCook, college baseball spring training is fighting against a wintry curve ball for the Morton Junior College Panthers.

Their field is snow covered with more than foot in some places.  It’s a situation that threatens the start of the season for Morton and most other college teams faced with this long winter.

Chris Wido plays catcher told WGN News,  “Were supposed to open up for season this Wednesday and it’s not looking good.”

Indoors is the only place they’ve practiced so far.  And it’s okay for drills, but not for games.

It’s a disadvantage for college teams from the north.  And for the players who look to a professional career hampered by canceled games.
