FDA considering 3-parent embryo procedure
A baby with three parents? It’s possible – and now health officials are considering allowing the technique for fertility treatments.
An FDA panel heard three days of testimony regarding the technique.
First a sperm and egg are taken from a couple as with traditional fertility treatment.
But, if there is any defective genetic material in the egg, it can be removed and DNA added from yet another woman.
The healthy egg and sperm are married to create an embryo that is implanted in the mother.
The procedure could eliminate inherited disease like muscular dystrophy.
But, critics say it opens the door to creating so-called “designer babies.”
