A former Chicago police officer charged with plotting a gruesome murder took the stand at his trial Thursday.
Steven Mandell is accused of planning to kidnap Steven Campbell, torture him until he gave up his cash and real estate, then kill him and cut-up his body.
Prosecutors rested their case on Thursday morning. They played the last of several, secret audio recordings before they rested.
The defense says Mandell was just full of bluster.
Campbell testified at the murder conspiracy trial on Wednesday.
He claimed Mandell left him a note at his home in Riverside in the fall of 2011 inquiring about a commercial property in Brookfield. Campbell said he called the number on the card. He spoke to a man, who he felt gave suspicious explanations for his interest in the property, and lied about how he found Campbell’s home address.
