Chicago’s horse and carriage owners are coming together to oppose a ban on the Chicago tradition.

14th Ward Ald. Ed Burke introduced a ban on the carriage rides, saying it is cruel for the animals to be downtown.  He says downtown congestion is also an issue and he would like to ban the carriage rides once and for all.

Carriage owners say they were never contacted about the proposal and are wondering why the issue is coming up now.

In New York, the mayor is also planning to ban the carriage rides in Central Park.  It’s a move animal rights groups have been in favor of for decades.  Chicago’s hearing on the ban is expected in the coming weeks.
