Woman charged with stealing multiple puppies from pet stores
A woman has been charged in connection with multiple Maltese puppy thefts in Illinois and St. Louis.
According to prosecutors, Shelly Hess stole a dog from a Lake St. Louis Petland store back in November. They say she then drove to Naperville and Bolingbrook, Illinois where she proceeded to steal two more dogs.
Surveillance video captured Hess placing a Maltese puppy under her coat and walking out of the Petland in Bolingbrook.
All three of the stolen puppies, which average about $1,700 each, were dropped off at the Lake St. Louis Petland store by an unknown man on November 10th, 2013.
According to police, Hess bought two dogs from the Naperville Petland on November 22nd and called several times confessing to the crime saying that buying the two dogs would make it right.
She made the calls from her cell phone, police said.
