Unique school teaching lost art of mosaics

Mosaics are an art form that dates back thousands of years. They are seen all over the globe, most extensively in Europe and the Middle East and in the U.S.  it is growing in popularity.

Karen Ami is the founder of the Chicago Mosaic School, the largest and one of the only mosaic schools in North America.  It is 8000 square feet of classrooms, a gallery, shops and artist studios teaching people of all ages the long, somewhat lost, art.

60 different classes and workshops introduce students to everything from classical work to reproduction and everything in between.  It is all thanks in part to Italian artist and teacher Matteo Randi who’s spent the last 30-years putting together thousands of works now shown all across the globe.

Students break and shape their own pieces, everything from stain glass to stone and a rare stock pile of 13,000 pounds of byzantine glass recently obtained by the school from the largest mosaic installation in the U.S. the St. Louis Basilica.
