The paint isn’t even dry on the front door, but the kitchen is hopping as Stan’s Donuts prepares to open in Wicker Park Wednesday.
Rich Labriola, the chief dough boy behind the Labriola Artisan Bread Company, is expanding his kneading skills to sweets.
Labriola is adding his unique flare to a known name — Los Angeles-based Stan’s Donuts has been around for nearly 50 years.
But Labriola won’t change his basics: Donuts here are hand rolled and cut, including a variety of flavored old-fashioneds, glazed and Stan’s specialties, like the Peanut Butter Pocket.
Oh and don’t skip the coffee — it’s getting special attention, too. Each cup ground and brewed to order.
Inside Stan’s there’s plenty of seating to relax and enjoy the sweet staples and occasional specialities like crème bruele or whatever other tastes become intriguing.
“I figured out how many pounds it takes to open a donut shop: my baker gained 15, I gained 15,” Labriola said.
