Firefighters battled the extreme cold at an apartment building fire in Bridgeview overnight.

The fire began just after 12am near S. 91st Street and S. Harlem  Avenue.

Firefighters had to rescue a family that was trapped inside a ground floor unit, where the fire began.

The fire was contained to that unit but the building filled with smoke.

More than 15 people were forced from their homes and stood by and watched in the below-zero temperatures.

A woman in her 70’s was taken to Christ Hospital for treatment of  smoke inhalation.

No one else was injured.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
