Martial arts program focuses on bullying prevention

Martial arts, known for building discipline, character and respect is now turning its focus to bully prevention.

“It’s not the same as it used to be. Bullying doesn’t stop at the end of the school day anymore,” said Carrie Riedel, program director at Pro Martial Arts, which just opened in west suburban St. Charles last month. Its focus is The ARMOR Program, which is aimed at bully and predator prevention for kids age 7 and up.

The 12 weekly classes start with discussions about what makes a bully, how to avoid becoming a victim and how to get away.

Class continues with more traditional martial arts training with the goal to build character and confidence..

Statistics show one in four kids between kindergarten and 12th grade will become a victim or a bully themselves. Riedel says these classes can turn both around.
