Authorities: Woman charged with stealing morphine that caused friend’s death

A Palatine woman has been charged with drug-induced homicide in the death of a man who died last May of an overdose of morphine the woman stole from a medical clinic where she worked, police said.

Michelle Johnson, 40, was charged Friday in the May 26 death of John B. Maher, 34, according to a release from the Cook County sheriff’s office.

Maher, who lived in Palatine, died as a result of taking morphine prescribed to someone else, according to the release. Investigators believe Johnson had stolen the narcotic from a medical facility where she worked in unincorporated Maine Township.

Johnson and Maher were friends and spent time together after the theft of the morphine, according to the release.

Johnson was charged with drug-induced homicide, theft over $500 and delivery of a controlled substance.

She is expected to appear in bond court Saturday.
