After a half century of volunteering at Methodist Hospital in Merrillville Indiana, 83-year-old Margaret Detert certainly found her calling.
Margaret and her dear friend of nearly 60 years Nora Nehring started there back in the ‘60s. Some folks thought they were sisters.
Methodist hired Nora to run its volunteer department while Margaret kept working free of charge.
In 1978 Margaret developed rheumatoid arthritis. She’s had two hips replaced, and the arthritis affected her hands quite a bit. But you’d never know it. She’s only taken off for some surgery, but came right back, brace, and all.
Once mobile around the hospital, she now answers the phone and dispatches the volunteers to areas where they’re needed. She’ll keep doing it until she can’t anymore.
Margaret Detert is One of Chicago’s Very Own.
