Jeweler may pay $150,000 in refunds based on New Year’s Day snowfall
Hundreds of people in the Mundelein area spent Wednesday morning rooting for more snow.
More than 200 people bought Christmas jewelry at PK Bennett Jewelers.
The owner offered them a special incentive: If it snows more than three inches between midnight and noon, all of that jewelry is free.
“I would love to give this money back to them,” owner Rich Bennett told WGN. “It would be so much fun. And to us, it’s a great way to say thank you to them.”
If the final snowfall beats three inches, Bennett will have to refund about $150,000.
The store took out a special insurance policy for the promotion.
“Once I get that check, then we’ll plan what we’re going to call a ‘cash and champagne’ party,” Bennett says. “We’re going to have all the customers who were involved in this come in for a party one night, just for them, and we’ll give them their money back.”
The snow total will be measured at O’Hare Airport.
