Frigid, snowy week ahead

December has been a cold and snowy month in Chicago and from all indications, January is poised to follow in its footsteps.

Reinforcing blasts of arctic air will keep temperatures well below normal and send the mercury tumbling to subzero levels on several morning. A parade of weather disturbances will bring the city at least three shots for accumulating snowfall this week.

The first arriving Monday evening appears to be a minor one with accumulations generally an inch or less. A far more significant storm begins on New Year’s Eve and is expected to produce a prolonged period of snowfall likely to last into Thursday resulting in significant accumulations for the area. Following a frigid, but dry late-week interlude, another round of snow is expected to arrive by Sunday as yet another storm system takes aim at the area.
