8-year-old girl dies in Christmas Eve crash

An 8-year-old girl is dead and a man was hospitalized after the car the man was driving  crashed into a tree around 11:15 p.m. in the Englewood neighborhood authorities said.

The 26-year-old man was driving westbound on Garfield Boulevard and crashed into a tree with the roof of the vehicle landing against the tree.  He is in police custody and charges are pending.

It took about 40 minutes for rescuers to free the man and he was taken to John H. Stroger Hospital of Cook County in critical condition but is expected to survive.

After removing the man, they noticed the 8-year-old girl inside after searching the vehicle and were able to free her about 15 minutes later.

She was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital but later died.

There were toys inside the vehicle authorities said.

The relationship between the man and the girl was not immediately known.

The Chicago Police Department’s Major Accidents Investigation Unit is investigating the crash.
