A husband and wife were killed in a house fire in Naperville this morning.
57-year-old Tom Lambert and his wife, 56-year-old Jan were both killed in the fire at their home on the 1200 block of Field Ct.
Tom Lambert’s 84-year-old father and 56-year-old sister were injured, but are not believed to be seriously hurt. A 21-year-old man working as a caregiver was seriously hurt.
A family friend told WGN called the fire, “just the latest” tragedy for a family that has endured some heartbreaking trials and tribulations.
According to the friend, Jan Lambert suffered from brain cancer and has been blind for decades. Tom Lambert was also diagnosed with brain cancer about a year and a half ago. The disease forced him to stop working as a psychologist and he had some difficulty walking.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. However investigators say an open gas line in the house fed the flames making this a very dangerous situation. The fire became so intense, it melted through the floor.
Investigators believe Tom and Jan Lambert were originally on the second level and then fell through the floor where they became trapped before they eventually lost their lives.
The fire chief says due to the fall and intensity of the flames the lamberts were likely killed before firefighters arrived.
The investigation continues.
