‘Miss Sunshine:’ Students, staff remember teacher fatally struck by cars

Students and staff said goodbye to first grade teacher Linda Darlington today at a Hobart, Indiana elementary school.

She and the Good Samaritan who stopped to help her Saturday night, were both killed in what investigators call a tragic accident.

In just a short number of years at Martin Elementary School, Linda Darlington earned a reputation for being an innovative and beloved teacher.

For those who knew Darlington, its a tragic accident they now have to try to explain to students. Some are writing letters.

“She was always someone who I called Miss Sunshine,” school principal Kasey Allen said. “Every day I would get emails from her telling me ‘I love being here,’ ‘Don’t I have the best job ever?’ And she would send me pictures of the kids working or pictures of her with them. She just brought life out here in our building.”

Darlington was one of two people hit and killed after she went down an embankment near Crown Point.

William “Riley” Knight, 49, who was with his new bride Nikki, stopped to help on the way from their wedding reception.

Nikki was in the car when Riley and Linda were hit by three vehicles while crossing the dark roadway.

Those who were at the wedding reception on saturday night are heartbroken.

“He was the happiness I’d  ever seen him and so was Nikki,” said friend Angie Lowe.

Darlington was married and had three children.

Riley Knight had two of his own children and two new stepchildren from his marriage just hours before he died.

Alcohol was not a factor in the accident.

So far, there’s no word on memorials or funeral services.
